Virginia Gebhart, a retired pharmacist and a community organizer for universal health care, is also a health care advocate for her son, a liver transplant recipient. As the mother of a young man who wishes to take ownership of his health and life, she sees that complexity and high cost of insurance and medications are huge barriers to good health care.

“Complexity is killing us. It is killing people who cannot navigate the endless, abusive bureaucracy created by insurance companies and pharmacy benefit managers. It is killing providers who are conflicted and stressed because it leaves little time to provide care. It is killing people who cannot access and afford their medications. Health care professionals and the general public want and need affordable, simpler health care.”
